m+r, campaigns, ongoing

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I connect people with the issues they care about at m+r, a communications and advocacy firm working with progressive nonprofit and foundation causes. My work gets people engaged and holds policymakers to task on issues like juvenile justice reform, support for working families, and early childhood education. My most successful campaign messaging work helped defend tax credits for 50 million working families, one of the most significant anti-poverty policy achievements outside of health care reform since the 1990’s. My least successful campaign tried to get people to move to Providence, Rhode Island, and landed me on the pages of the NYT.

I've been at it for more than a decade. In that time I've has also grown a side business hand painting signs for shops around Los Angeles. My favorite project was painting storefronts for several women-owned bodegas in East Los Angeles as part of a UCLA-funded program to end food deserts.

Before all that, I was the first City Editor for The Brooklyn Rail, shoulder-tapping strangers to talk to them about what they cook for dinner and editing coverage of the borough from Greenpoint to Coney Island. You can read samples here, here (Independent Press Award winner, 3rd place for best investigative news story), here (included in Brooklyn Rail Anthology, Pieces of a Decade), here, and here.

I once walked 240 miles through the High Sierra with my sister, Katie. Today I hustle from Los Angeles, where I live with my son and designer husband.
